Here is a brief overview of the class that I taught and co-taught. The class took place at the Spring International Language Center (SILC) from March 25, 2013 to May 08, 2013. The class met twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) for 2 hours (from 1:00 – 3:00 pm). The class is a mixed level class, i.e. Basic and Level one students together in one class. The lead teacher of the class was Sara Holzberlein. The class was designed to cover the survival skills that every newcomer to a new culture and language should know. Therefore, Sara (the lead teacher) and I tried to pick the essential skills that we thought our students would need to survive in their daily life. For example, knowing how to give directions, knowing how to describe sicknesses and remedies, knowing the names of the body parts, etc.
